Irwin J. Lubbers graduated from Hope College in 1917. After teaching at Vorhees College in Vellore, India (1919-1922), Lubbers returned to Hope College as a lecturer in English (1923-1929). Lubbers subsequently served Carrol College as assistant to the president (1930-1934) and Central College as President (1934-1945).
